Bali has roughly 15 to 20 international schools. They range from Green School's nature-based programme to IB, British and American schools, and they serve expat families, long-term residents and a growing number of remote workers with children.
Fees
Most schools charge roughly IDR 150 to 320 million a year (about USD 9,000 to 20,000). Green School, one of the most expensive, charges about IDR 178 to 319 million. Fees are well below those in Bangkok or Singapore.
Where the schools are
Canggu and Seminyak have the largest expat community, made up of remote workers, long-term residents and business owners, and schools there are growing quickly. Ubud is quieter, and its schools tend to focus on nature, sustainability and the arts. Sanur is a quieter, family-oriented beach area. Denpasar, the capital, has few international schools.
Traffic is lighter than in Jakarta but still slow at times, so check the commute before you choose a house.
Green School and other alternative schools
Green School is the best-known school on the island. It teaches through projects with a focus on sustainability, not a conventional curriculum. It is expensive and selective, so apply early and make sure you understand its approach. Bali also has smaller schools built around permaculture, nature-based learning and similar ideas.
Conventional international schools
For a conventional structure, there are British, American and IB schools. They are smaller than city schools, so classes are usually small.
Practical points
- Healthcare: there are international hospitals for routine care, but serious conditions may mean travelling to Australia or Singapore.
- Internet: reliability varies by area and season, so test it before committing if you work remotely.
- Weather: the rainy season (November to April) brings humidity and some flooding.
- Turnover: many families stay one or two years, or less, and schools are used to frequent arrivals and departures.
Admissions
Most schools admit on a rolling basis and are not heavily oversubscribed, though popular schools can fill at peak times. Decide first whether you want an alternative or conventional school, then location and budget. Bali's parent community is well connected, so current families are easy to find and ask.
